Epoxy Flakes

Epoxy Flakes or Solid Epoxy Coatings: Which is right for you?

When it comes time to upgrade a floor, epoxy is very often a great option. The real question however is whether to do a solid epoxy coating system or an epoxy flake system? They are both durable, protective coatings but they act differently. Let’s compare the two and demonstrate why the flake system is often the better option.

Performance and Durability

Solid epoxy has a smooth seamless surface. It is stain and spill resistant. Solid epoxy is a durable coating, however it can easily become slippery and it can be hard to mask scratches or chips. Epoxy flakes create a texture to the surface which adds grip and makes damage a little less visible. Since the flakes disrupt the surface visually, chips or small imperfections will not be easily noticed and can be dealt with quickly.

Design and Style

Solid epoxy floors provide a tidy, consistent finish, and that’s a great look for some applications. However, if you are looking for a bit more variety, epoxy flakes offer far more options. The color, blends and patterns can give your flooring a unique design, and it also masks dirt and scuffing better over time.

Value Over Time

Generally, solid epoxy flooring is easier to install which, depending on a contractor’s pricing structure, can result in a lower initial cost. Epoxy flakes systems may cost more upfront, but the value of epoxy flakes is often better over time. They typically look better for longer, are easier to repair, and bring value with their “pop” of design flexibility.

The Bottom Line

Epoxy flakes combine safety, style, and value. If you do not need an ultra-smooth finish for heavy industrial use applications, epoxy flakes are the right choice for most garages, shops, and home projects.
