Concrete does not need to be dull or look overly industrial. Decorative concrete can look beautiful and colorful, just like a home or businesses flooring can with tile, wood or stone. Two of the most common methods of coloring concrete are acid stained concrete and acetone dyed concrete. Both methods provide 2 different yet beautiful aesthetics and offer benefits that each ones brings to the table.
Let’s review both methods of color to concrete and come to a conclusion as to which color application is the best choice for your project.
-
Acid Stains
Acid Stains, sometimes referred to as chemical stains are a process that reacts with lime and calcium in the concrete to enable the stain to penetrate rather more deeply to provide rich depths of color with very unique and distinctive marbling. Since it is a chemical reaction, no two surfaces will ever look alike and therefore have a unique and one-of-a-kind project.
Because the decorative color becomes part of the concrete, acid-stained concrete is permanent. Acid stains are commonly seen in driveways, garages, patios, or indoors for commercial buildings, or place of business where a more organic or custom look is desired.
Once the acid stain has been applied to the pour surface, a solvent-based sealer is applied. The sealer serves to protect the surface from moisture and enhances the color. The resulting effect is depth, durability and visual texture that can last many years with minimal maintenance.

Concrete Dyes
If you want a quicker process, as well as more control over your color, you may want to consider getting acetone-based concrete dyes. Because dye does NOT rely on a chemical reaction like acid stains do, it penetrates the concrete to provide a uniform and predictable color.
Dyes are available in a wide range of colors, everything from light earth tones to reds and blues. You can even mix colors or layer applications for custom designs! Because they dry VERY quickly, sometimes in 10 minutes or less, dyes are good for quick projects or creative applications that require precision.
However, dyes are best indoor application as they are not UV resistant and will fade if you use them outdoors and are in direct sunlight. Although, in interior floors, I love using dyes as they have a beautiful and sleek glossy finish which give it a modern and low-maintenance look.

Selecting A Finish For Your Area
Both are great options to achieve a stunning surface from bland concrete. A way to think about it:
- Use acid stains if you’re looking for natural patterns that are not predictable and a timeless stone-like patina.
- Use acetone dyes if you’re looking for colors that pop, apply quicker, and create a more controlled finish.
You can also use the best of both worlds together to achieve the thought-out layered effect that make your floors unique.
