Galveston Metallic Epoxy

A metallic floor is poured once and cannot be repeated or repaired invisibly. On an island slab that pushes vapor, getting what is underneath right matters more than anywhere else we work.

Metallic on a slab that pushes moisture

Metallic epoxy is a pigmented resin carrying metallic particles that migrate as the resin moves and settles. The pattern is a record of that movement frozen when it gels, which is why no two floors match and why nobody can promise a specific figure from a photograph.

That unrepeatability is exactly why the slab underneath matters so much on this island. A blister from vapor pressure cannot be patched invisibly, because the surrounding pattern cannot be recreated. The repair options are re-pouring the section with a visible boundary or re-pouring the room, and both are expensive ways to learn that the moisture test was not optional.

So on Galveston we treat the moisture barrier as part of the metallic system rather than an add-on. The test comes first, the barrier primer goes down where the numbers call for it, and only then does the decorative layer get poured.

Slab flatness

Metallic is thin and self-levelling. Every low spot and trowel mark telegraphs through, so grinding is most of the job.

Humidity and working time

High humidity affects cure and finish. We schedule pours for conditions rather than convenience, and run dehumidification in an enclosed space when needed.

UV-stable topcoat

Any island room with real daylight through glass. Standard clear ambers here quickly and it shows badly on a light pour.

The trade-off, stated before you buy

Metallic cannot be spot-repaired. A gouge, a blister or a scratch cannot be blended, because the surrounding pattern is unrepeatable by anyone including whoever poured it. Anybody telling you otherwise has not had to do the repair.

For a showpiece space where damage is unlikely, it is the right system and nothing else looks like it. For a working garage that takes dropped tools, or a rental property with turnover, we will recommend flake instead and explain why rather than selling the more expensive floor.

One pour, no undo, no match later. On an island slab, that makes the moisture test the most important number on the proposal.

Timing matters more here than inland. Metallic needs a stable slab temperature and a controlled room while it flows and cures, and on the island the humidity swings hard between a morning off the water and a hot afternoon. We schedule these pours around that, close the space up, and run the dehumidification rather than opening a bay door for airflow the way a flake floor would tolerate. That is also why we will not squeeze a metallic pour into a half day between other trades. If a cabinet crew or an electrician needs the room the next morning, we move the pour instead of rushing the cure, because a floor pulled into service early stays soft in spots and there is no going back over it later.

Where metallic genuinely earns its place on this island is in the spaces people photograph: vacation-rental interiors, boutique retail on the Strand, restaurant and bar floors along the seawall. Those rooms are chosen partly on how they look in a listing photograph, and a poured metallic floor does something no other system does at any price.

What we will not do is pour it into a room that fights it. A ground-level garage that floods, a rental with heavy turnover, a working shop with dropped tools: those are flake rooms, and recommending metallic into them would be selling the more expensive system knowing it will disappoint. The conversation at the walkthrough is as much about where metallic does not belong as where it does.

The build is grind, test, barrier primer where needed, prime, pour, then two clear topcoats. The topcoats are the wear surface, so gloss level and scratch resistance are decided there. Anything getting Gulf light through a window or a door gets UV-stable clear as standard.

Three to four working days for a normal room with cure between coats, light foot traffic usually the day after the final topcoat. Island humidity stretches those numbers, and we schedule the pour itself around the weather rather than the calendar.

Can you match a floor I saw online?

We can match the palette and the general character, not the pattern. The veining comes from how the resin moves in the first fifteen minutes and it is genuinely unrepeatable, including by the installer who poured the original. Anyone promising an exact match is telling you what you want to hear.

What happens if it blisters?

That is the failure mode we design against on this island, and it comes from vapor pressure under an unbarriered slab. It cannot be patched invisibly because the pattern cannot be matched. This is precisely why we will not pour metallic on an island slab without testing first, even if a client asks us to skip it.

Does the humidity here cause problems?

It affects cure time and finish rather than ruining a floor, provided the crew plans for it. In an enclosed space we run dehumidification during the pour and cure. In an open or semi-open space we schedule around the weather. A crew that pours regardless of conditions is how a metallic floor goes wrong.

Will it yellow in the sun?

Standard epoxy ambers under UV and Gulf light is harsh. Any floor of ours getting real daylight gets a UV-stable topcoat. If a quote for a sunlit island room does not mention UV, that is a genuine gap rather than a detail.

Is it slippery?

A gloss metallic with no additive is slick when wet, and on this island floors get wet. Where that matters we add fine texture to the topcoat, which costs a little reflection clarity and makes the floor safe. In a dry interior showroom we leave it smooth.

Can you pour over tile?

Not directly. Tile has to come up or be ground back to a sound substrate, because any hollow or movement telegraphs through a thin metallic layer within months. On the island there is a second reason: tile can hide a moisture problem we need to measure before committing to this system.
